An Ethical Approach To Sourcing Beans
Peet’s beans are source from around the world, specifically in the Indo-Pacific, South America, and Central America. But what are the impacts of growing and harvesting these beans, both environmentally and on the livelihood of the the farmers themselves?
Peet’s takes a strong stance on ethically sourcing their beans by honoring the farmers and their farms! A third-party organization, known as Enveritas, conducts more than 20,000 sustainability audits on the farms Peet’s buys from every year, all paid for by Peet’s on behalf of the farmers. These audits look into three main categories to ensure that Peet’s is compliant with their sustainability promises: Social, Environmental, and Economic Impact. Each audit hits more than 500 data points per farm.
Enveritas’ and Peet’s social impact checks include things such as ensuring no child or forced labor is being taken advantage of on these farm. They also check that minimum wage restrictions are being followed and that farmer’s have decent housing, clean water, and health and safety contracts.¹
Their environmental checks include compliance with soil, water, and energy conservation as well as ensuring there is no deforestation, pollution, nor use of banned pesticides happening on these farms.²
Lastly, the economic checks keep an eye on transparent pricing, ethical business practices, traceability and record keeping, and no forced land evictions. They also track sustainable production, access to training, and ensuring that no farmer falls below the poverty line.³
Peet’s is committed to “sourcing with an impact”. So far they have extended their farms, audits, and ethical practices to 24 countries, supporting over 24,000 farmers worldwide!⁴
Enveritas currently surveys 89% of the global coffee production and strives to cover 100%. Some of their other plans to make an impact include planting 45,000 shade trees in Sumatra over the next three years, providing clean water to elementary school in Papua New Guinea, and providing child-care for seasonal workers in Costa Rica.⁵
